Great Family Movies

In todays society we have become somewhat desensitized to the violence and "adult" content in our cartoons. Having young children I have found that its hard to guage what movies are actually appropriate. I remember as a child my parents were VERY strict about what I was aloud to watch. Our cartoons consisted of Bugs Bunny and the road runner. Even tweetie bird didn't REALLY get eaten. Today cartoons like those on cartoon network have a great deal of one character or group of characters killing another character. Even our commercials for video games are of those where the main character is blowing up people, blood spattering on the screen. Yes they paraphrase by saying this is for 13 and over, but have already planted the seed with my 7 year old. Granted games when I was a kid, were more like atari and just beginning ninetendo.

So, here are just a few of my favorite childrens shows, well my kids' favorite shows, and ones that even adults can enjoy:

Game Plan: starring the Rock. This is a wonderful show about a football player (Joe Kingman) who meets his daughter and learns that life isn't just about the game but its about family. Lots of fun and laughs, and of course the music is generally Elvis. My children love this film and everytime we watch it we are always laughing, and my youngest wants to watch it everyday if possible.

Hoodwinked: Great film about the unknown story behind "Little Red Ridinghood" Very cute music, and animation. This one is about how the story of Little Red Ridinghood really came about. Granny is a high flying daredevil, Red Ridinghood is a delivery girl, and the Wolf is a reporter. Great movie for the entire family.

Spykids: This one is about kids who find out their parents are really spies. The kids take it upon themselves to rescue the parents from Minion and Floop. Terri Hatcher, Antonio Banderas star in this film. There is some violence but its taylored to silly string thats cement, and things like that. No one is exploding!

Underdog: Excellent film about a mad scientist who accidentally turns a beagle into a super hero. James Belushi is the security gaurd who helps bring the mad scientist down. Very entertaining, even my husband enjoyed this film.

These are just a few movies that we like to watch, and thankfully they are good even repitiously. And parents know just how VERY often we watch the same thing over and over again.

  1. yeah...make sure they don't watch anything that would cause them to feel they need to sleep with a spatula under their pillow. (*_*) Children of the Corn is actually a great one for bedtime.
